MTA removes trash cans from more subway stations

The MTA is removing trash cans from several city subway stations, including two in The Bronx, as it expands a pilot program that aims to cut down on garbage.The East 143rd Street and 238th Street stations will no longer have trash cans. The MTA wants commuters to take their trash with them as they leave subway stations, and by removing the bins, the agency hopes to cut down on rats. Subway riders will be encouraged to do their part through posters.The MTA says the stations without trash bins will be closely monitored over the next six months. After that, transit officials will determine whether they can remove trash cans from all stations.Riders who spoke with News 12 The Bronx had mixed feelings about the pilot program.
