Best of the Bronx: Mott Haven home hosts artist's work

A Bronx artist's work is being featured inside a Mott Haven resident's home, rather than at a typical gallery space.
Marco Saavedra's work is featured at the Alexander Avenue home of Blanka Amezkua.
"This neighborhood culture, I incorporate it into my work," Saavedra says. "Kind of pay homage to this community that has welcomed me and my family as undocumented immigrants to the South Bronx."
Amezkua, an artist herself, says it's about highlighting the beauty in the community.
"I'm just going to open it up for anybody who would like to give a workshop or a presentation," she says. "It doesn't necessarily have to be artistic. It can be just anything in general, the idea is to just bring people together."
Saavedra, 27, says his work is always political and a reflection of his life and his immigrant rights struggle.
"Art is, at its core, a form of resistance and I think the reason why we have so much beautiful art amongst marginalized communities is because it's a showing of vitality," he says.
Saavedra's art show will run until the end of February.
