Families rally to pass hit-and-run safety legislation
Family members of hit-and-run victims rallied Tuesday around legislation aimed to help catch offenders who flee the scene of a crash.
One bill calls for a system similar to Amber Alerts that sends out smartphone notifications with hit-and-run descriptions. The other would establish a reward fund that would encourage witnesses to speak up.
The legislation is named in honor of Jean Paul Guerrero - better known as DJ Jinx Paul - and is called Jean Paul's Law.
As News 12 reported, Guerrero was fatally struck on Dec. 19, 2016 after leaving a nightclub where he performed.
At a hearing Tuesday, a representative for the NYPD said there is support for the idea but that further discussions are needed.
The exact details of the two bills are still being worked out by the committees on transportation and public safety. The legislation must pass a vote in the committees before it goes to the full council.
