Dozens of people came out to Coney Island to beautify the boardwalk for the summer season.

Community groups and individuals were encouraged by the New York City Parks Department to decorate trash bins near the beach.

At least 20 years ago, many people looked forward to this event, but  over time people lost interest and the Parks Department stopped doing it. 

The event was brought back this year and people now have the chance to win prizes based on their artistic designs.

The decorated trash bins can be seen on the boardwalk when the summer season starts on Memorial Day.
