Affordable housing construction begins in East New York
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday new construction for an affordable housing development in East New York.
Officials say 888 Fountain Ave. will turn a large, empty lot into a boon for the local community.
Many area residents are welcoming the new development, but some neighbors are already criticizing the project, saying they would rather have had a new park or playground on the lot.
Supporters say the affordable housing project will combat increasing gentrification in similar neighborhoods.
Developers say the complex will include 1,100 new affordable units in eight new buildings spanning seven acres of land. The apartments will be made available only to potential tenants who meet income requirements or those with disabilities. Rents will range from $328 for a studio to $1,300 for a three-bedroom unit.
