Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams was in Crown Heights Sunday to launch a new initiative to help the homeless.

Adams announced plans to launch Brooklyn Homeless Awareness Month in June.

The Coalition for the Homeless reported in March there were an estimated 16,000 homeless families in New York City, with nearly 21,000 homeless children.

Adams says his family came close to being homeless several times while he was a child.

He say shelters like the one on Rogers Avenue are needed to help the homeless crisis.

Adams is asking churches to talk about caring for the homeless from the pulpit.
