Officials say dozens of firefighters battled a garage fire early Wednesday morning in Allerton.

They say the detached garage caught fire around 2:30 a.m. at 2738 Tenbroeck Ave., just a few yards away from several homes.

The homeowner says he tried to pour buckets of water on the flames, but quickly realized he couldn't extinguish it himself and needed help from authorities. The man says he called 911 and 12 units reported to the scene with 55 firefighters.

Neighbors say they are happy the flames did not spread.

The homeowner says there was nothing of importance inside his garage, and that he's thankful no one was hurt. He believes a generator inside the garage either blew up or somehow caught fire.

Fire officials say they are working to determine the exact cause.
