THE BRONX -

Officials announced that gourmet food shop Mekelburg's will be the first tenant at the former Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg.

Construction has been underway for nearly two years at the site, located on 325 Kent Ave. The real estate developer says other parts of the area will be a mix of apartments, offices, shops and a public park.

"We heard again and again from the community and the community board that they preferred small, local, independent retailers," says Two Trees Managing Director Dave Lombino.

Mekelburg's opened its first store a couple of years ago in Clinton Hill.
