City officials push for BQE renovation

City officials say time is running out to repair a section of the aging Brooklyn Queens Expressway in Downtown Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Councilman Stephen Levin is one of several elected officials pressuring the state to grant Design Build Authority for a 1.5 mile stretch of the BQE. He says it will save hundreds of millions of dollars.
The BQE was built about 60 years ago. City officials say that while the old and crumbling road is safe for now, it won't be for long.
NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg says Design Build Authority would simplify the construction process and could shorten construction from seven years to five.
The Department of Transportation has until the end of June for the bill to pass in the state.
