Brownsville congregants rallied outside the Catholic Charities walk-in center on Joralemon Street Wednesday in an effort to save their local church.
The protesters say a judge lifted the temporary restraining order protecting the 109-year-old Our Lady of Loreto Church from demolition. The Diocese of Brooklyn and Catholic Charities own the property and have been trying to knock it down.
The Brownsville Cultural Coalition says it would like to see the church turned into a cultural center for the arts, music and theater.
Catholic Charities says it is pleased with the judge's decision, and that it will work with the community to build affordable housing and community space in Brownsville.
