Tenants who call the Marcus Garvey apartments home celebrated some major improvements to the complex at an event held Thursday.
The $190 million capital improvement project includes a new improved security system, a new playground, new lighting, renovated bathrooms and kitchens, and solar panels to make the complex more energy-efficient.
The tenant association president says the apartments never had surveillance cameras until now.
"The crime has gone down. They used to go wild at Marcus Garvey houses. Other people coming in from the outside, lots of fights and guns, a lot of robberies, muggings, but now it's much better now," says Alicia Taylor, president of the tenant association
There are some tenants who protested the event, saying that they have seen increased rent and fees that make it unaffordable to them.
