The second annual Central Brooklyn Arts and Culture Celebration hosted a ceremony Sunday to honor celebrities who are paving the way for the next generation of artists.
The “Welcome Back to Brooklyn” ceremony was held in the Botanic Garden and honored the family of the late abstract neo-expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and multi-platinum hip-hop star Fabolous.
“[Kids] can become, you know, whatever they want to be,” said Fabolous. “…Whatever they want to be that gives them that inspiration, that motivation to keep going forward.”
Attendee and drummer Luis Figueroa says music is a positive force in his life that keeps him from hanging around in the streets.
Figueroa tells News 12 it is encouraging to see a fellow Brooklyn native “make it” in the arts.
The honorees received engraved pavers and keys to Brooklyn as a token of the community’s gratitude.
