A group of dancers is bringing Caribbean flair to Brooklyn as part of the New Traditions Festival 2017.
The festival kicked off Friday at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Downtown Brooklyn.
Dancers say the festival is all about embracing their Caribbean roots.
This year's signature piece is "Our Caribbean Spirit," which unites dancers from various island cultures and traditions in New York City. The performances consist of traditional styles that include salsa, meringue, reggae and rumba.
Festival founder Candace Thompson, who came to New York City from Trinidad 12 years ago, says she started the project in 2014 with the goal of making a place where Caribbean dancers could feel at home, despite leaving their countries.
The festival runs through Sunday. Tickets are $15.
