Bronx twins graduate as class valedictorian, salutatorian
Twin sisters are graduating at the top of their class as valedictorian and salutatorian.
Fatoumata and Mariama Kanuteh will stand side by side and address their soon-to-be-graduating class of the Bronx's School for Tourism and Hospitality, which held its commencement rehearsal on Monday.
Fatoumata, the older sister by minutes, is class valedictorian. She says she is looking forward to publicly thanking those who guided her along the way.
The twins, whose parents come from Gambia, are the first American high school graduates in their family. They say they hope to be an example for their eight younger brothers and sisters.
English teachers say the girls possess a quiet strength that has carried them through their high school years.
Fatoumata and Mariama will deliver their speeches in front of their graduating class Tuesday evening at Lehman College. They will attend Brooklyn College this fall.
