Mayor Bill de Blasio could lose control of New York City schools at the end of the month if state legislators do not extend the law by tomorrow’s deadline.

The state handed control of city schools over to Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2002, which Mayor Bill de Blasio then inherited.

However, the law is set to expire at the end of the month. Lawmakers only have until Wednesday's legislative deadline to come up with a decision.

If mayoral control of the schools lapses, control will go back to the state and the Board of Education, which could result in the removal of the mayor's newly announced plan to grant free universal pre-K to New York City children.

Lawmakers are expected to come up with a decision by tomorrow.
