Staffers acted heroically when a former doctor entered Bronx-Lebanon Hospital and began shooting, officials announced during a news conference Monday.
Dr. Chilinuri, the hospital's chief physician, says that during the time of the shooting, staff members continued surgeries, delivered babies and also rushed to treat the wounded during the attack.
The shooter has been identified as 45-year-old Dr. Henry Bello, who used to work at the hospital but resigned after a sexual harassment suit, according to officials.
Police say Bello entered the building armed with an illegally purchased AR-15 rifle and searched for one doctor who he believed was the reason he was terminated. He began firing at 2:50 p.m. Police say he fatally shot himself a short while later.
Dr. Tracy Sin-Yee Tam was fatally shot, while five staff members and one patient suffered gunshot wounds.
One doctor, who was shot in the neck and is a second-year resident of Bronx-Lebanon, left the hospital Monday surrounded by her family, doctors and nurses. She works in the family medicine unit on the hospital's 16th floor and is the first of the injured to be released.
Five others remain hospitalized, but doctors say their conditions are improving.
