The basketball court at Crispus Attucks Playground is set to be renamed after rap legend Christopher "Biggie Smalls" Wallace thanks to the efforts of a local community board.
Councilman Robert Cornegy proposed the renaming as part of a promise to Biggie's mother after his 1997 murder.
The court is located just blocks from where Biggie Smalls grew up.
"There's just something special about being here," said Deonte Jarvis, a frequenter of the courts. "It's his stomping grounds."
Some community members disagree with the renaming, expressing concern for the message in some of Biggie's lyrics.
Cornegy, however, said the renaming is a testament to the community understanding the importance of honoring one of its own even amidst controversy.
"I would do anything in my power to preserve his legacy," he said.
