The scene outside Miosotis Familia's Sedgwick Avenue home was somber Wednesday, as neighbors and friends gathered in disbelief over the slaying of the 12-year NYPD veteran.
The officer was fatally shot in an ambush-style attack around 12:30 a.m. while sitting inside of her command vehicle on Morris Avenue and East 183rd Street.
Police say the man accused of shooting her, 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, was also shot and killed by police during a gunfight shortly after the incident.
Bonds was out on parole following a burglary in Syracuse, according to officials.
Familia, 48, was a Bronx native and leaves behind several children.
Her neighbors were at a loss for words outside her apartment.
The Police Benevolent Association released a statement on the brutal attack. "Officer Familia gave her life protecting a neighborhood plagued by gang violence," the statement read.
Officers stood guard outside the residence for some time as police continued their investigation.
