Police say a 28-year-old woman has been charged after leaving her two children unattended at a homeless shelter on Emmons Avenue.
They say Genevieve Gonzalez left her 3-month-old and 2-year-old alone Thursday morning. When she returned around 7:30 a.m., the baby girl was found not breathing and unresponsive.
The infant was rushed to Coney Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An Administration for Children's Services spokesperson says the agency and police "are actively investigating the circumstances of this fatality."
Gonzalez is charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child under the age of 17.
Police say there was no visible trauma or injuries to the infant. The investigation into her cause of death is ongoing.
