BED-STUY -

A double shooting killed two young mothers at the Stuyvesant Gardens Houses in Bed-Stuy Wednesday night, police say.

The two women, Chynna Battle, 21, and Shaqwanda Staley, 29, were standing with a large group of people when gunfire erupted outside 740 Gates Ave. just after 9 p.m., according to witnesses.

Police say a bullet struck Battle in the head. She later died at Woodhull Hospital.

Another shot struck Staley in the back, and she was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Both women leave behind young daughters. Neighbors and other community members held a vigil in their honor Thursday night.

Police did not immediately say whether the women were the shooter's intended targets.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
