Bensonhurst Park is falling apart, according to people who say they used to like going there.
"It's disgusting," says Ashley Vaccaro, who likes to meet her friend to catch up at the park -- but they don't venture far inside. "I just went to use the bathroom and there were flies and dirty toilet paper everywhere."
Elvira Rozman says she remembers coming to the park as a kid with her grandmother.
"You would have people sitting all over the grass with blankets and picnics," Rozman says. "Kids would be rollerblading."
Now it's full of cigarette butts, discarded snack wrappers and people who smell like alcohol, the friends say. A tractor, parked inside a caution tape barrier, has been sitting in one place for a month, Rozman says.
"There's tape, but there's nobody working on it," she says. "So no clue"
On Thursday, trashcans were overflowing. Litter was scattered on the ground. Flies swarmed everywhere. Parents say the problem is getting worse.
"A couple years ago there was a slide," says Marta Mleczko, a mother of two. "It was clean. Right now it's just a shame."
The city departments of Parks and Sanitation tell News 12 they're investigating the situation.
