Girls soccer team kicked out of rec center over discrimination
A longtime soccer coach claims the Sunset Park Recreation Center is getting rid of his all-girls program because they would not include boys.
After years of coaching boys, Jack Deacon started an all-girls soccer program five years ago. He says his group got the boot from the indoor center because it claims he is discriminating against the boys.
Sources tell News 12 that the all-girls program typically had fewer than 15 participants and limiting the team to only girls was excluding boys from getting to play.
A rec center representative says in a statement: "Parks' mission is to serve as many kids as possible, and we will continue to offer diverse and fun activities at all of our recreation centers."
Deacon says that when girls play together, they develop skills at a much more even speed than when boys also take the field. Some girls also say that the boys they've played with can be too rough.
