Flower mural unveiled at Tompkins Houses in Bed-Stuy
Community members gathered Thursday to celebrate a new mural at the Tompkins Houses in Bed-Stuy.
Groundswell, a social justice arts organization, partnered with the New York City Housing Authority to create a colorful mural on a blank brick wall. The organization says young people from the area helped paint a flower mural as part of a program that transforms blank walls into art.
Organizers say they named the mural "Community is a Garden," inspired by the community garden run by tenants at the Tompkins Houses. They say they wanted to use flowers as symbolism, representing new beginnings, love, passion, dedication and anticipation for the future.
"They think more of where they live and they take care of where they live better," says tenant association president Leora Keith.
Groundswell says other murals have been painted in the area, including one called the "Compass of Dreams."
