Mother of 200 foster children gets surprise 50th birthday party
A couple in Bedford-Stuyvesant that raised over 200 foster children and adopted a handful of their own over their 20 years of marriage were paid back in gratitude Saturday during a surprise birthday party.
Raymond Sanchez, one of Mario and Althea Cataldo's foster children, says "love" was all they needed to make it work at a two-story home in Bed-Stuy.
"She was the one who took me and that was the last foster home I ever had," said Sanchez, whose parents died when he was a baby.
It was a packed room for Althea's 50th surprise party in Flatbush - many of the foster children she had not seen in years.
"We were kind of that get-along family…you didn't feel picked on," said the couple's daughter Andrea Verley. "We just made it work like most people do."
