A Bronx post office was renamed Wednesday in honor of a local veteran who made history during World War II.
The Morris Heights post office at 2024 Jerome Ave. now bears the name of Dr. Roscoe C. Brown, who was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen – a group of all-black, heroic Air Force pilots during World War II.
The renaming, which required an act of Congress, was approved with the help of Rep. Jose E. Serrano, a personal friend of Brown’s.
"He was always there, and was always a quiet, reasonable voice pointing out that which we should've known in the first place,” says former Mayor David Dinkins. “Roscoe was a real hero."
News 12 The Bronx has learned that Dr. Brown flew 68 combat missions as the commander of the elite unit and is known as the first African-American fighter pilot to shoot down a German military jet.
After returning home from the war, Brown fought for equality and advised politicians during the civil rights movement.
Brown served the Bronx as president of Bronx Community College for more than 15 years. He was also a professor at NYU.
