Documentary on food waste premieres in Brooklyn

Posted: Updated:
BROOKLYN -

A new documentary coming out next week is aiming to change people's perception of food waste and habits.

Celebrity chefs Anthony Bourdain and Danny Bowien, alongside Emmy Award-winning director Nari Kye, are behind the new film, "Wasted! The Story of Food Waste."

The film premiered at the Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn Thursday.

The film's creators say the main message of the film is to think about the food we eat.

"I think food waste is one of the biggest problems that nobody knows about in America alone; we waste almost half the food that we produce," says Kye. "Forty percent just goes completely uneaten when there's almost 1,000,000,000 people that are going hungry every day."

Bourdain says they are hoping to open people's eyes with their film.

"This is an issue that is important to me as someone who is a chef professionally for 30 years and I hope in some small but entertaining way we bring this issue home to people," says Bourdain.

The movie officially comes out in theaters and video on demand Oct. 13.
