A teacher at the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism in Flatbush was arrested Tuesday for allegedly inappropriately touching a student multiple times.
Police say there were several incidents that occurred between February and June, and in at least one of them 65-year-old Mervyn Affoon allegedly touched a student's groin over his clothing at the school. The alleged victim is now 17 years old.
Sources tell News 12 that the arrest was made after police set up a controlled phone call with the alleged victim and Affoon after the student recently came forward with the allegations.
Several students who say they know Affoon well tell News 12 that the he has a wife and two grown children, and they insist that he's innocent.
Affoon faces charges that include forcible touching and sex abuse.
"These disturbing allegations have absolutely no place in our schools and represent behavior that violates the trust of students and families," a Department of Education spokesperson said in a statement. "Mr. Affoon was immediately removed from the classroom and reassigned away from students pending the outcome of this criminal matter."
