A Jewish center that was battered by Superstorm Sandy five years ago has been restored.
Hundreds of religious texts were destroyed and the basement was gutted as Sandy swept through the Sea Breeze Jewish Center, although the upper sanctuary was spared.
The center reopened its doors last month, just in time for the High Holy Days, after a $1 million restoration, paid for by Chabad and state funds. During that time, the synagogue had to shift its social events and Hebrew school to other venues in the area.
Rabbi Zushe Winner and his wife say they are grateful for all of the support they have received.
