On the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, a public art project is helping people understand what water could say if it was able to talk.

Artist Katherine Behar worked with PortSide New York and Pioneer Works to develop Maritime Messaging: Red Hook.

The project is a staged mock conversation between the water of Red Hook and a digital assistant app that invites the water to send messages and translates the gurgles into words.

Performances took place on New York City ferry boats traveling from Wall Street to Red Hook until Sunday evening.
