Canarsie yacht club thriving since Superstorm Sandy

BROOKLYN -

A Canarsie yacht club hit hard during Superstorm Sandy in 2012 has since recovered, and many members say that after the grueling rebuilding process, it's now better than ever.

"I was devastated to see this place," says member Salvatore Cottone. "It was unreal."

The remaining members of the Midget Squadron Yacht Club pooled their time and money to restore what they describe as their home away from home. They started with 80, but after the storm membership dwindled to 40, they say.

Each of them chipped in about $1,000 a piece, Cottone says, and rebuilt.

Membership has since grown to more than 100.
