NYPD officer found not guilty of murder in road-rage incident

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN -

A jury has found an NYPD officer not guilty of murder in the shooting death of an unarmed man in Brooklyn.

Defense lawyers for Wayne Isaacs argued the off-duty officer fired out of self-defense when Delrawn Small approached his car during an apparent road-rage incident on July 4, 2016. Initially, the officer claimed he was being assaulted before he opened fire -- a narrative that seemed to be refuted after surveillance video of the incident was made public. But after two weeks of deliberations, the jury found that the shooting didn't amount to murder.

"We are disappointed by the verdict, but we respect the jury's determination," New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office said in a statement. "I also want to thank the family of Delrawn Small for their courage and perseverance in the face of tragedy."

The trial marked the first prosecution by the attorney general since the position was appointed special prosecutor in cases in which civilians die at the hands of police officers.

Small’s family is now urging the mayor and NYPD commissioner to terminate Isaacs from the department.
