Nonprofit group Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow opened a temporary boutique Thursday in Sunset Park for students to pick out professional outfits free of charge and learn the proper way to dress for interviews.
"It's kind of hard to get these clothes on my own, because it's really expensive," said Kevin Jimenez, one of the students who participated. "And I need these clothes to go to school."
A showroom full of professional attire donated by several organizations was available for at least a dozen students to choose 10 pieces each to take home.
And the group also taught the students proper etiquette for when they go on interviews.
"They changed my life because when I was in high school, I was with the wrong people," said Summer Rosales, another participant. "I was getting arrested...I had probation. So when I went to OBT, they changed my life. They motivated me to go to school and be on time."
OBT helped the students with everything from clothing measurements to color coordination, according to Yanni Deconescu, who works with the program.
"Personal image and personal branding is rather important," Deconescu said. "How to actually shop for themselves and their partner -- these are really critical skills. Not only for their personal lives but also their professional lives."
