BUSHWICK -

A martial arts school in Bushwick is taking steps to make sure residents know how to defend themselves in dangerous situations.

Traditional Okinawan Karate of Brooklyn hosts free seminars every couple of weeks for women, victims of domestic violence and members of the LGBTQ community.

Students and staff showed News 12 the skills attendees will learn to help defend themselves if they're targeted.

"We are on purpose trying to target people who are usually targeted," says instructor Laurel Leckert. "We are targeting them to help them protect themselves."
