DCA offers tips to avoid scams this holiday

There is a lot to watch out for when it comes to online scams and reading the fine print on in-store deals.
The city Department of Consumer Affairs urges shoppers to do some homework before actually buying any product. It recommends using legitimate, familiar websites and apps to compare prices and find deals.
Another tip is to save receipts, which makes returns easier. Shoppers should also check the return policy before buying a product from any store.
Gift cards may be easy and useful gifts, but watch out for websites and social media promotions that offer free of discounted gift cards. These site often ask for personal information or to pay for a gift card that has no balance.
And the New York attorney general also has some advice, saying shoppers should protect themselves by using debit or credit cards. That way, you're not losing out on cash for a potentially dubious purchase.
