A key part of the plan to clean up the Gowanus Canal is drawing some backlash from preservationists.

The Superfund cleanup calls for new, combined sewer overflow facility. To make that happen, the city needs to seize properties through eminent domain, and one of its targets is located at 234 Butler St. in Gowanus.

Community members say the building, particularly its pediment, is historic and should be preserved. They say they acknowledge the need for overflow facilities, but say it shouldn't come at the expense of the century-old structure.

The conflict came to a head at a packed meeting Monday night at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Representatives for the Department of Environmental Protection say they are considering ways to keep the building, although that appears unlikely. They do plan on keeping the pediment that residents call a neighborhood icon.

The plan has already been approved by Community Board 6, which noted that it would prefer the pediment somehow be preserved in the process.

News 12 is told that Borough President Eric Adams is expected to release his recommendation by the end of December.
