Maimonides Medical Center workers protest scheduled layoffs

BROOKLYN -

Maimonides Medical Center workers on Thursday protested scheduled layoffs that could result in hundreds of people losing their jobs.

The hospital announced that layoffs may affect up to 200 employees, including both union and nonunion workers.

"Making these adjustments in staffing...at this time will allow us to continue the critical work of caring for Brooklyn's patients and families," the hospital said in a statement.

Maimonides points to the financial hardships it faces, caused by rising costs and flat or declining government reimbursements.

A union representative says they want to meet with hospital officials to explore other ways to shore up the budget shortfall, including hiring and overtime freezes.
