Local leaders are pushing for increased safety along a busy promenade in Bath Beach next to the Belt Parkway.
There is only 50 feet of guardrails on a mile-long stretch between exits 4 and 5 on the Belt Parkway, which could potentially leave bikers and runners using the pedestrian walkway vulnerable.
The safety threat is something Councilman Mark Treyger is hoping to address. He, along with Community Board 11, sent a letter to the Department of Transportation, demanding guardrails and other protective measures.
Treyger says the DOT would work with the Parks Department and the NYPD on the issue.
While the plan has accidents in mind, Treyger also says he is worried of potential terror attacks after eight people were killed along the Westside Highway in Manhattan in October.
"We see these terrorists and attacks are getting a lot more innovative," says Treyger. "We have to match that innovation plus one."'
The DOT says they are reviewing the letter sent by Treyger and declined to comment.
