Best of Brooklyn: Brooklyn man creates magical holiday displays

Posted: Updated:
EAST FLATBUSH -

A Brooklyn man has been creating magical mechanical holiday displays for decades.

Tucked in the back of a nondescript warehouse in East Flatbush, Santa’s workshop comes to life.

Twirling elves, sawing and sewing toys for all the good girls and boys.

Thier puppet master, Lou Nasti, started his mechanical display business when he was just 19 years old.

"My dad said ‘why don't you put a mustache on and you'll look older.’ Well, it never came off and now I'm Geppetto, right?" Nasti laughs.

Nasti's life changed overnight when the New York Times featured his homemade robot back in 1965.

Four decades later, he's still transforming fiberglass, wires and latex into everything from a giant illuminated Santa Claus in Dyker Heights to holiday decor for the king of Morocco.
