Transgender boxing class breaks barriers in Brooklyn

An exclusively transgender boxing class is breaking barriers in Brooklyn.
Located in Bed-Stuy, Trans Boxing New York City offers classes exclusively for transgender people.
"Growing up I've been assaulted, I’ve been humiliated many times, and I almost got killed a few times too so I think I have to know how to defend myself," says member Pearl Love.
Founder Nola Hanson realized that many locations were not suited for the trans community.
"Boxing gyms can be very intimidating environments, and for any marginalized group of people it's just a lot you're up against,” says Hanson.  “So I wanted to take down those barriers to access.”
The class is donation-based and held every Thursday night, and Hanson says all are welcome to join.
While many participants are looking to learn self-defense moves, it's also a way to increase confidence and awareness.
"When your body physically gets stronger, your brain gets stronger," says Love.
