Saturday’s snowfall did not stop a Brooklyn group from bringing a Puerto Rican tradition to the borough.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, many families are turning to music to begin to heal, and this year’s Parranda – a holiday musical festivity – gave many an opportunity to do just that.
"One of the first images we saw after the hurricane was people playing music,” said participant Melinda Gonzalez. “And it's just so emotional, because when the power’s out, these traditions last."
Dozens participated in the Parranda, uniting with their cultural roots and spreading holiday cheer.
“That's the whole idea, you go house to house, you go business to business in the local neighborhood,” said Gonzalez. “It's about community and visibility."
