Donations pour in for Bed-Stuy synagogue damaged in fire

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT -

Donations are coming from around the continent to a help rebuild after a devastating fire tore through a Bed-Stuy synagogue.

On Nov. 14, flames scorched Synagogue B'Nai Adath Kol Beth Yisrael, parts of which had been built in the 18th century.

Borough President Eric Adams announced that $20,000 had been raised so far from more than 150 people on the congregation's GoFundMe page.

The rabbi says the donations have come from as far away as Canada, and many of them came from total strangers.

"They are here with us in spirit," the rabbi says.

"It makes me feel good that so many people care," says 73-year-old Naimah Owens, who has been a member of the synagogue community since the age of 17.

The support started coming in days after a construction worker accidentally lit the roof on fire. No one was hurt, and the synagogue's Torah scrolls were saved.
