The remaining devastation from Hurricane Maria is spurring many island residents to relocate to New York.
While Florida is home to the largest number of Puerto Ricans since the storm, New York is second in hosting Hurricane Maria evacuees. On Monday, the city announced over $1.5 million in aid for Puerto Rican evacuees, to help them rebuild their lives.
For those evacuees in New York City, there is concern that they are unprepared for the wintry weather, but the funding is expected to help outfit and equip evacuees for the cold.
"We will not forget Puerto Rico, what they are going through,” says City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. “Not today, not tomorrow, not next month, not next year."
"Many of the Puerto Ricans and U.S. Virgin Islanders that are coming to New York City are not doing so for convenience,” says Peter Gudaitis, of New York Disaster Interfaith Services. “They’re coming here out of a desperate need."
