Thirty young ladies at Polytechnic High School participated in an ‘Introduce a Girl to Architecture, Engineering and Construction’ workshop Tuesday.
The event by the New York City Department of Design and Construction was designed to encourage young women to explore their interests in a professional field historically dominated by men.
The event is part of a STEAM program, which supports young women entering into science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.
"Today is our third annual ‘Introduce a Girl to Architecture Engineering and Construction,’” said Lee Llambelis, deputy commissioner of the DDC. “And essentially it’s the DDC’s intention to try to expose young women and the NYC public school system to careers in the building environment."
Participants gained insight into the various fields by drawing up blueprints for public spaces like libraries, museums and fire stations and listening to female professionals speak about their experiences.
