Prospect Park officially became a car-free area on Tuesday.
The entire loop drive that circles the park is now only for pedestrians and bicyclists.
During a car-free trial over the summer, the city Department of Transportation found that drivers did not experience any significant impact on traffic on alternate routes outside of the park.
After Labor Day weekend, the city received petitions with more than 1,000 signatures demanding the temporary change become permanent.
The DOT says it is confident that along with improvements to signal timing and turn lanes, any effects on traffic in the area can be minimized.
Parkgoers say they enjoy not having to worry about vehicle traffic along the loop drive.
Before Tuesday, Prospect Park's east drive was only open to morning rush-hour traffic.
