East New York tenant complains of lack of heat

EAST NEW YORK -

A tenant in the Long Island Baptist Houses in East New York say she is tired of dealing with no heat inside her home.

Laisha Edmond, 26, says she's trying to raise her 7-year-old daughter in what she calls an icebox, complete with broken windows and a nonworking heater.

She says she has resorted to boiling water and taking the potentially deadly risk of using an oven for warmth for the past four years.

News 12 explained Edmond's problems to the New York City Housing Authority, which within hours sent two workers to check out the apartment. Edmond says she's seen workers come, but they haven't fixed what's broken. She hopes that won't be the case this time.

Nearby, Brooklyn City Councilwoman Inez Barron said repairs weren't always so badly needed at NYCHA complexes.

"But since that time paint jobs are not being done appropriately, appliances are not being maintained adequately," she said.

Within the past week, Barron says she's received 80 calls from tenants in affordable housing, complaining of freezing temperatures in the homes.

A NYCHA spokesperson says crews are working around the clock to combat heat outages, but Edmond says she wants them to work faster.
