BK Public Library hosts civil rights forum

BROOKLYN -

Local leaders hosted a town hall discussion Thursday on civil rights and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program as lawmakers in Washington continued the fierce debate over a potential immigration deal.

One of the event's organizers is state Assemblyman Walter Mosley.

"We need to do everything possible in order to not only educate people, but to give them the power to talk to legislators in Washington," he says.

The goal is to promote education, culture, peace and community. The event's theme is "Love yourself."

Among the topics are the DACA issue, New York's DREAM Act, temporary protected status for some immigrants, voting rights, the 2020 census and present-day civil rights protests.

Many Brooklyn residents at the event say they're hopeful that lawmakers will reach a DACA solution by next month's deadline.
