Best of Brooklyn: Hip-hop DJ return to Brooklyn roots

Posted: Updated:
BROOKLYN -

A famous hip-hop DJ is returning to the city where he grew up, Brooklyn.

DJ Self has been spinning for artists like Alicia Keys, and now has a time slot to showcase his music at radio station Power 105.1 in New York City.

DJ Self grew up in Fort Greene during the golden age of hip-hop.

“Doing music to be honest, that was kind of like the only thing that I wanted to do. I didn't want to do anything else,” says DJ Self.

Now that DJ Self is established, he says he can help give back to the community that he grew up in.

“I decided to help out kids that don't have book bags or school supplies in my neighborhood in Brooklyn,” says DJ Self.  “So I decided to start a thing called Gwinin' Gives.”
