NYC leaders urge gov't to prevent immigration activist's deportation

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Dozens of elected officials and activists rallied on the steps of City Hall Wednesday in support of immigration activist Ravi Ragbir, who was released from federal detention Monday but still faces deportation.

News 12 is told that Ragbir's deportation order, which stems from a wire fraud conviction years ago, has been stayed until Feb. 9. Because of that, a horde of officials, including the public advocate and City Council speaker, gathered to pressure federal officials to reverse the decision.

Earlier this month, Ragbir was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during his regularly scheduled check-in. He was released Monday night after a judge ruled the detention was too abrupt and that Ragbir deserved a chance to say goodbye to his family.

Advocates say they plan on introducing a City Council resolution demanding that Ragbir be allowed to stay in the country.

News 12 reached out to ICE, which said, "That is a matter for the courts. ICE has no involvement with such decisions."
