A Rikers Island corrections officer was seriously injured after being beaten by inmates.
The Correction Officers' Union released a photo of the officer, who is now hospitalized in Manhattan.
He has a fractured spine as a result of the beating.
Police say one inmate, a suspected gang member, punched the officer. Then three other inmates began to kick him.
The union calls this the worst attack they have seen on an officer in years.
The victim's name has not yet been released.
The beating, which was reportedly all caught on surveillance camera, happened at the George Motchan detention center on Rikers' Island.
Mayor Bill de Blasio aims to close the jail this summer.
