Mayor Bill de Blasio has outlined changes to school security following last week's deadly shooting in Florida.
The mayor says all New York City schools will be required to have regular shelter in place drills and random metal detector searches in middle school and high schools in the event of a shooting.
The mayor has strongly spoken out against President Donald Trump’s suggested policy to arm teachers with guns.
The mayor says adding more weapons to city schools is only responding to the problem.
Governors from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island are forming a coalition of like-minded states on gun control, hoping to make progress where they see the federal government has faltered.
